LTD Gateway Station and Gateway EmX Extension
Lead Jurisdiction: Lane Transit District
MTIP:

July - October 2008
Lane Transit District will construct a new Gateway Station at Gateway Mall during July-October, 2008. The new station will be located adjacent to Gateway Street between Umpqua Bank and the Roadhouse Grill Restaurant.

Traffic should continue to flow smoothly past the construction area. There may be short periods when traffic will temporarily be merged into one southbound lane on Gateway Street adjacent to Gateway Mall. There will be easy detours within Gateway Mall to guide traffic around the construction site.

More Information on the new Gateway Station
Lane Transit District will construct a new Gateway Station at Gateway Mall during July-October, 2008. With favorable construction conditions, the new station will open in November 2008.

Gateway Station will replace the existing station and will be located adjacent to Gateway Street. This location is more central to Gateway Mall than the present station at the south end of the mall near Target and will better serve the neighborhoods east of the mall.

No disruption in existing LTD bus service will occur. Buses will continue to operate from the current station at the south end of Gateway Mall during construction of the new Gateway Station. Once the new station is ready for service, the changeover will be made. Following the changeover, the current station will be demolished and replaced with customer parking spaces. Overall, construction of the new station will increase the amount of parking spaces for mall visitors.

Originally constructed as part of the mall development, the existing station near Target opened in 1990 and is now 18 years old. This station accommodates only two buses, has limited shelter and seating areas, and is in need of structural upgrades. The location also creates time-consuming circulation patterns for bus routing and requires bus operators to navigate crowded pedestrian areas while traveling the mall's circulation roads.

A key component of the Gateway Station will be customer amenities. The station will feature an enhanced pedestrian crossing between the station and the road the circles the mall parking lot. A covered walkway will shelter people as they walk between the mall and the station. Covered waiting and seating areas will offer a more comfortable environment for passengers.

Gateway Station will provide four bus bays that will accommodate two LTD buses as well as two EmX vehicles when the Gateway EmX Extension service begins in late 2010. The $2 million project is funded by the State of Oregon ConnectOregon program and federal discretionary funds.

EmX Extension
The second EmX corridor, also known as the Gateway EmX Extension, was approved by the Springfield City Council, Lane County Board of Commissioners, and LTD Board of Directors in November 2006.

In May 2008, LTD received approval from the Springfield City Council to complete the final design and construct the Gateway EmX Extension. This corridor will extend the existing EmX service traveling between downtown Eugene and downtown Springfield to the popular Gateway area.

In less than three years, you’ll be able to ride EmX to the Gateway Mall, the University of Oregon, downtown Eugene and Springfield, area motels and neighborhoods, and the many businesses and employers along the way including Sacred Heart Medical Center, Royal Caribbean, Symantec, and many more.

During 2008, you may observe engineering crews conducting preliminary work along the corridor. Work may include digging test holes to locate utilities or completing other geotechnical tasks. Construction of the Gateway EmX Extension will occur during 2009 and 2010.
