The Work Schedule
The anticipated schedule calls for the project contractor
to close the Fern Ridge Path June19 through June 21 in
order to place erosion control measures and trim trees
and shrubbery. Path will reopen until excavation of the
existing path begins on July 31. This work consists of
a full depth reconstruction of the path finished with a
new concrete surface, replacement of handrails and realignment
of the intersection of the Arthur Street access to the
path. Other improvements included in this project are the
resurfacing of the 14th Avenue path between Arthur and
Garfield with concrete and the installation of ramps and
islands on City View. Closure of the path can be expected
for the duration of the work. The work is scheduled to
be complete by the end of September.
The project schedule depends on
weather and a number of other factors. Please check with
this website or the other resources mentioned, for the
latest information on schedule and traffic control.
Why Is Eugene Public Works Reconstructing
the Fern Ridge Path?
The primary reason for this project
is the asphalt surface is deteriorating due to nearly continuous
longitudinal edge cracking along both sides of the path,
causing unsafe traveling conditions. Additionally, sections
of handrail are missing and/or falling off giving pedestrians
a false sense of security. In addition, access and egress
from Arthur St. south onto the path is misaligned and potentially
dangerous for bicyclist entering from Arthur St. as well
as the pedestrians using the path.
How Is The Project Being Funded?
The
Fern Ridge Path reconstruction is being funded primarily
with Federal Surface Transportation (Urban) funds with
City Transportation SDC funds used for local match.
For
more information about transportation planning and funding,
see the Lane
Council of Governments website.
Access And Alternate Routes
While
sections of the path are under construction, the path will
be closed in the work zones. Closure of the path is necessary
for safety reasons and to complete the project as quickly
as possible.
Path users will be detoured onto a temporary path from
the east side of City View Street approximately 250 feet
to the existing connection to 12th Avenue. For the safety
of all path users, cyclists must dismount and walk their
bicycles through the temporary path. As an alternative
to the temporary path, pedestrians requiring a hard, level
surface may use West 11th Avenue as access between City
View and 12th Avenue.
The section of path between Garfield and Chambers will
remain open, and the Blue Heron Bridge, which crosses the
Amazon Creek in Westmoreland Park to 18th Avenue will remain
open throughout the project.
Noise, Dust And Other Construction-Related
Inconveniences
In addition to traffic impacts, projects
of this sort are sometimes noisy, dusty, and can include
other construction-related inconveniences. The staff at
the Eugene Public Works Department will work individually
with residents and businesses in the construction area
to anticipate and mitigate as much as possible these inconveniences.
