Why is the City
of Springfield building a roundabout?
The City of Springfield is building a roundabout
to provide a safe, efficient and cost-effective intersection.
In order to accommodate projected future traffic volumes
at this intersection with a conventional signal, the
City would need to add several extra lanes. A roundabout
allows traffic to continue flowing and not back up at
the intersection.

Project Timeline
Construction of the northern portion of the roundabout is already underway. Construction
of the first phase that will restrict traffic on Hayden Bridge Way and Pioneer
Parkway is scheduled to begin on June 9th and continue for about 80 days to
August 28th. Phase 2 starts immediately after that and will continue to October
6th, when the entire MLK Jr. Parkway and roundabout are expected to open to
traffic.
These dates depend on weather and a number
of other factors, and are likely to change. Please check
with this website or the other resources mentioned, for
the latest information on schedule and traffic control.
The Result
The Martin Luther King, Jr.,
Parkway will provide a four-lane connection from
Downtown Springfield to the Gateway area. It provides a
much needed travel link for these areas and completes an
arterial link from the Beltline Hwy to OR126.
Project Benefits
Roundabouts improve the safety, economy, capacity and environment
of the intersection. They are safer than other
intersections because they eliminate head-on, angle,
and left-turning traffic crashes. When compared to a
signal, studies show that roundabouts provide up to a
90% reduction in fatal crashes, 75% reduction in injury
crashes, 30 -40% reduction in pedestrian crashes.
Drivers will save
time and reduce fuel consumption. The city saves money
because operations and maintenance expenses of roundabouts
are less than traffic signals. Our community saves because
collisions are less frequent and much less severe, reducing
insurance cost, medical cost, and the human cost of injury
and death. Roundabouts also reduce the need for roadway
expansion to accommodate the lines of stopped vehicles
generated by traffic signals.
Roundabouts can carry 30-50% more vehicles
than similarly sized signalized intersections during rush
hour because traffic is always on the move. During light
traffic conditions, roundabouts cause almost no delay,
whereas traffic signals can cause delay to side streets
and left-turning traffic at any time. Increased
capacity at roundabouts is due to the continuously flowing
nature, versus waiting turns at a red light.
Fuel consumption and air pollution are reduced
significantly due to fewer stops and lower travel delay.
Project Funding
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway and Roundabout Project
has been reflected in adopted local and regional transportation
plans since 1992. Funding for the combined project was
provided from a variety of sources, largely Lane County
Community Development Road Improvement Assistance Program
(CAP) Funds ($5.24 million) and the Peace Health development
($4.1 million).
For more information
about transportation planning and funding, see the Lane
Council of Governments website.
