The Work Schedule
The reconstruction project is scheduled to begin June 15th and work effecting traffic should be complete by August 30th. For the duration of the project the northbound lane of South 42nd will be closed to through traffic. All traffic headed north from Jasper Road should take the South 32nd detour.

Striping, driveways, tree planting and other work will continue until October 15.  This work will be done with single lane closures, allowing through traffic.

The above dates are approximate. The project schedule depends on weather and a number of other factors. Please check with this website or the other resources mentioned, for the latest information on schedule and traffic control.

Why Is Springfield Public Works Reconstructing South 42nd Street?
The City of Springfield is reconstructing South 42nd Street in order to improve safety. Setback sidewalks and bike lanes will make the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. New concrete pavement is going to be poured, which will last longer and, in this case, happens to be cheaper than asphalt.

How Is The Project Being Funded?
This project is funded by money from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). ODOT gave the street to the City of Springfield as part of a jurisdictional transfer. The funds to bring the street up to current standards and improve the pavement condition were included in the transfer. Construction cost for this second phase of the project is $1.9 million.  Construction work to modernize the street from Main to Jasper has cost $3.5 million.

Access And Alternate Routes
During construction please take South 32nd as a detour if you are heading to the Jasper Road area.

Noise, Dust And Other Construction-Related Inconveniences?
In addition to traffic impacts, projects of this sort are sometimes noisy, dusty, and can include other construction-related inconveniences. The staff at the Springfield Public Works Department will work individually with residents and businesses in the construction area to anticipate and mitigate as much as possible these inconveniences.

Within the Springfield City limits, noise producing construction activities are restricted to the hours of 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.  To help complete this project as quickly as possible and ensure the best quality street possible, the contractor has been granted a waiver for sawcutting of joints in fresh concrete.  Sawcutting will be the only activity allowed after 6:00 pm, but may continue late into the night on days when a lot of concrete pavement has been poured.  This activity is likely to occur for only a few nights in the period through August 30.
